Tommy Robredo announces retirement after Barcelona Open loss

Tommy Robredo, the former world number five, lost the final match of his career on Monday at the Barcelona Open, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

Robredo, who made his professional debut in Barcelona in 1999 and won the title there in 2004, announced his retirement following this week’s event in his hometown.

In 2013, the 39-year-old defeated Roger Federer in the US Open and won 12 ATP titles. He advanced to the quarterfinals of seven grand slams.

Zapata Miralles, rated 119th in the world, outplayed his fellow Spaniard and won in just over an hour.

Lorenzo Musetti of Italy advanced to the second round of the clay-court season after defeating Argentinian Sebastian Baez 7-5, 7-5.

Last week, Musetti beat world number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime in Monte Carlo.

Brandon Nakashima, an American, also advanced. In the second round, he will face second seed Casper Ruud after defeating Spanish qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona 7-6 (8/6), 6-3.
