Simu Liu says filming his upcoming film Barbie is like ‘hanging out with pals.’

Simu Liu, who will play Barbie in the upcoming romantic comedy, has highlighted the unusual set setting. After a series of computer-animated, straight-to-DVD films, Greta Gerwig directed and co-wrote the comedy, which is the first live-action rendition of the fashion doll brand.

The production of a Barbie film began in 2014, and since then, it has gone through several directors, screenwriters, and potential actors, with the project even changing from Sony to Warner Bros. However, principal photography began in March 2022, with the release of Robbie’s first image as Barbie, and the film is now scheduled for release on July 21, 2023.

While it is unknown what roles the actors will play, it has recently been rumoured that the movie would feature multiple versions of the two iconic toys. Liu has now released more information about the Barbie set’s atmosphere, which appears to be rather colourful.

Simu told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “The aesthetic of the movie is just so vibrant and full of life. Imagine showing up to that set every day with a bunch of friends, like, ‘Great, cue the music!’ We’re dancing, and then you come out of a 12-hour day, and you’re like, ‘Did I really go to work today? Or did I just hang out with my friends?”

Barbie, according to Liu, is an incredibly colourful and glossy film that appears to have all the creative elements of a musical without actually being one. It also backs up Liu’s earlier claim that Barbie would include wild dancing scenes.

Furthermore, Barbie’s ensemble features Simu Liu, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell.
