In recent years, relations between Khartoum and Addis Ababa have gotten worse because of the disputed border territory of Fashaqa. This is a fertile strip that Ethiopian farmers have been farming for a long time, but Sudan says it belongs to them.

In recent years, the Al-Fashaqa region, which borders Ethiopia’s turbulent Tigray province, has witnessed intermittent violent conflicts between the Sudanese and Ethiopian sides.

Tensions between the two sides spiked after the conflict started in Tigray in November 2020, causing tens of thousands of refugees to migrate into Sudan.

Since then, Khartoum and Addis Abeba have engaged in a violent verbal battle, exchanging charges of violence and territorial transgressions.
