Synopsis
Some of those targeted claimed they were made aware of "Russian disinformation based on criminal hacking."
According to Google, a website that released hacked emails from key players involved in the Brexit process has ties to Russian hackers.
The website, dubbed “Very English Coop d’Etat,” claimed to have revealed emails from former MI6 head Richard Dearlove, renowned Brexit activist Gisela Stuart, pro-Brexit historian Robert Toombs, and other pro-Brexit campaigners.
The website claims to be part of a fervent pro-Brexit gang that is secretly ruling Britain.
However, two victims of the leak revealed on Wednesday that they had been targeted by hackers and blamed the Kremlin.
“I am well aware of a Russian operation against a Proton account which contained emails to and from me,” Mr Dearlove, who oversaw MI6 between 1999 and 2004, told Reuters, referring to the privacy-focused email provider ProtonMail.
